Tester  disappointed

LONDON Colney manager Nigel Tester was disappointed his side did not perform to their best against Chessington and Hook United in the FA Vase on Saturday.

The Blueboys had the chance to make the last 32 for only the second time in their history but that chance slipped away as the visitors, with a compact defence, broke away and scored twice. Tester said: "We never got going attacking wise. It was a case of us not performing on the day and I am really disappointed about that. We probably surprised ourselves that we got as far as we did, but we deserved to. On Saturday we didn't deserve to go any further."

Missed chances have cost the team at crucial times this season and Steve Flain was unable to convert two good opportunities in the first half. Tester said: "We had two great chances to score but couldn't take them. At 2-0 down we changed it and threw a lot more people forward and they were under the cosh but it was too late. If we had got an equaliser we would have gone on to win it but that is not important now."

London Colney's match at Levestock Green was postponed on Tuesday due to the fire in Hemel Hempstead. Boss Nigel Tester was glad of the break with injuries mounting up in his squad. The game is likely to be re-scheduled for Tuesday, December 20.

Dave Ross suffered a recurrence of his injury in the Vase match and David Parkinson is now doubtful for the trip to Oxford City with ankle ligament damage after going off in the second half. The injuries will hand chances to other members of the squad and young Barnet attacker Harry Hunt is expected to start. Tester said: "Harry is very lively, he gets at people and is very fit which he should be, as he goes training every day. He wants to be a centre forward but at the moment he needs to develop physically and that will come with age and experience. He came in on the right side of midfield on Saturday and he has done well there for me and also as a forward. He is a great lad and got a good assist against Chessington."

Tester has swooped to sign Stephen Ashby from Berkhamsted Town. The left-sided defender knows the league after a spell with Welwyn Garden City last season. On Saturday at Oxford City, the Blueboys will be hoping to continue their good league form against the Premier Division title hopefuls. They recently beat Hillingdon Borough and drew with Hanwell Town.

Tester pleased with the players

London Colney joint boss Nigel Tester was pleased with the response of his players in the FA Cup on Saturday and then the league on Tuesday, after two bad opening defeats. The boss said: "We had a discussion and sorted a few things out. We know the players are good enough, but it is a case of finding the application and the commitment. On Saturday we were very unlucky to lose and I thought we were the best side. Considering Rothwell were supposed to be from a higher level, then I felt we set ourselves a certain standard of work rate that we must maintain."

Nigel Tester has been impressed with striker Steve Flain, who returned to the side with two goals in two games. Tester said: "Flainey had a broken bone in his foot so missed pre-season but he has comeback from three weeks in America and gone straight into the side. He can hold the ball up and links well, allowing us to play through midfield. His experience has given the team a lift and he has two goals in two games."

City Youth move to Colney

ST ALBANS CITY YOUTH, the city's biggest youth football club, are to become a feeder club for London Colney, rather than St Albans City, as from next season.

Traditionally, City Youth have played Allied Counties Midweek Youth League games and FA Youth Cup ties at Clarence Park and a number of Youth youngsters have gone on to play for the Saints, including the likes of Chris Seeby, Greig Deacon and Craig Mackail-Smith who was recently selected for the England National Game XI.

The Youth set-up though has always been financially independent from the Conference South club.

However, from next season, the Allied Midweek Counties League side will play at Cotlandswick under the name St Albans City Youth (London Colney) but play in the FA Youth Cup under the guise of London Colney FC.

The Sunday sides, which comprise of 30 teams and 430 youngsters, will be unaffected, but still provide players to the Midweek Youth team.

St Albans City will be represented at youth level by the PASE (Program for Academic and Sporting Excellence) which combines college studies with football and is now in it's third year. The team, which is managed by former first-team boss Steve Castle, will play in a Nationwide Conference PASE League with home games at Clarence Park.

City Youth chairman Clive Attwood - who helped, along with a number of others to resurrect the City Youth Midweek side five years ago - was excited by the challenge ahead, but disappointed to be leaving Clarence Park.

"We're very happy that London Colney have come in and offered us this opportunity of linking up. Hopefully we will be able to help them with our structure as well.

"It will be a natural progression for us and a good standard and hopefully we will have a local team full of local boys.

"Of course we're disappointed to be separating from St Albans City but we were only ever affiliated, we always financed ourselves. Yes, they allowed us to use the facilities but we got our own sponsorship deals, paid match officials, organised coaches away and, two years ago, even helped the senior club to make some money by organising a joint sponsorship deal.

"But I suppose the writing was on the wall when the PASE team was formed five years ago. They see this as an opportunity to focus on the PASE team and of course that is their right," Attwood added.
